The 12 holiest shrines of Lord Shiva are collectively called as the 12 Jyothirlingas or Dwadasa Jyothirlingas. The main significance of these shrines are that, Lord Shiva who is depicted in the form of Lingas everywhere is depicted as a Jyothirlinga in these holy places. These shrines are the most important religious places to visit for a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. It is said that a person who visits all these Jyothirlinga shrines is washed off all the sins he has ever committed in his previous seven births.
